Shaped Mullen Pro King Dee Bit

The mullen mouth is a non-jointed mouthpiece — a single, solid, gently curved bar with no break at all — and the "shaped" polymer version refines that solid bar's contour to fit the mouth even more naturally, all built in a soft, comfort-focused material.

Design

• Unlike any of the jointed mouthpieces discussed so far, a mullen mouth has no joint whatsoever — it's a single continuous bar, with a slight curve to accommodate the tongue.
• The "shaped" aspect refers to this curve being specifically contoured to follow the natural shape of the horse's mouth and tongue more closely than a simple straight or barely-curved bar.
• Made of soft, flexible polymer (often apple-scented), typically molded around a stainless steel core for strength, though the steel isn't in direct contact with the mouth.

Function

• No nutcracker action at all: Because there's no joint, there's no folding or V-shaping of the mouthpiece under rein pressure — this eliminates the classic nutcracker sensation entirely, not just reduces it the way a double joint does.
• Even, gentle pressure across the whole mouth: The solid bar applies fairly uniform pressure across the tongue and bars simultaneously, rather than concentrating force at a joint or shifting pressure between the two halves independently.
• Softened further by polymer and shaping: The soft polymer material adds cushioning on top of the mullen's inherently gentle mechanics, while the shaped curve improves the fit against the tongue and palate, reducing any remaining pressure points a plain straight mullen might create.
• Conforms to the mouth, especially for low palates or larger tongues: The curved, shaped design allows the bit to sit comfortably even in mouths with less room, since it follows the mouth's natural contour rather than pressing a straight bar across it.
• Encourages acceptance: The pleasant scent and soft, warm material help build positive associations with the bit and reduce resistance.
• Useful for horses that duck behind the contact: Because a mullen mouth (jointed or not) offers a very stable, non-folding surface, it gives a horse less opportunity to evade contact by manipulating a joint — some horses that try to drop behind the bit to avoid a jointed mouthpiece find a solid mullen harder to evade.
• No leverage or added severity: As a true snaffle-family mouthpiece (when on a snaffle-style cheek), this works purely on direct pressure, with no shank or curb chain.

What it's good for

• Horses that tend to drop behind the bit or evade contact: Since there's no joint to manipulate, a mullen mouth offers a steadier, harder-to-evade surface, making it useful for horses that duck away from jointed bits.
• Young or green horses starting bit training: The combination of a gentle, non-jointed action with soft polymer and a pleasant scent makes this an approachable, encouraging introduction to contact.
• Horses with a low palate or large tongue: The shaped curve is specifically designed to accommodate these conformations more comfortably than a straight bar or a jointed mouthpiece that folds into the palate.
• Sensitive-mouthed or apprehensive horses: As with other polymer mouthpieces, useful for horses wary of metal or needing a gentler overall experience.
• Horses that dislike jointed bits generally: Some horses that seem uncomfortable, tense, or resistant in any jointed mouthpiece (single or double) settle much better in a mullen, since the mechanics are fundamentally different rather than just "softer."
• Dressage and general schooling: Mullen mouths are commonly used and accepted across disciplines specifically for their calm, stable, non-folding action.

A note on limitations

• Because the bar is solid and doesn't fold, a mullen mouth offers less independent side-to-side movement than a jointed mouthpiece — some riders find it gives less nuanced lateral or one-rein communication than a single- or double-jointed bit.
• A solid mullen mouth can also make it easier for a horse to lean on, since there's no joint pressure that shifts uncomfortably under a heavy, sustained pull — this is worth watching for in horses already inclined to lean.
• As with any polymer mouthpiece, it can be chewed and worn over time, particularly by persistent chewers.

A note on classification

• The overall lateral action still depends on the cheek style (loose-ring, D-ring, eggbutt, Full Cheek, etc.) this mouthpiece is built into.
• This is generally considered one of the mildest mouthpiece types available, combining the inherently gentle, non-jointed mullen action with the additional softness and acceptance benefits of polymer.

Summary

A Polymer Shaped Mullen bit offers a solid, joint-free mouthpiece contoured to the natural shape of the mouth, built in soft, comfort-focused polymer — eliminating the nutcracker action entirely and providing even, gentle pressure across the tongue and bars, making it one of the mildest options available, particularly well suited to horses that evade jointed bits, have a low palate or large tongue, or are young, green, or sensitive and benefit from a calm, stable, non-folding contact.
